Frequently Asked Questions
What is a board-certified veterinary radiologist?
An American College of Veterinary Radiology (ACVR) Diplomate is a veterinarian with advanced training in either Radiology (Diagnostic Imaging) or Radiation Oncology (Radiation Therapy).
An ACVR board certified veterinary radiologist has undergone advanced training, completed the requirements, and passed the ACVR certification examination to become recognized as a Diplomate.
Why do I need a board-certified radiologist?
Veterinarians who are not board-certified, or those who are certified in other specialties recognized by the AVMA (such as Internal Medicine or Emergency and Critical Care) do not have the advanced training and expertise required for veterinary imaging and interpretation (radiology, ultrasound, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), nuclear medicine).
Board-certified radiologists have spent years learning to perform ultrasounds and ultrasound-guided procedures and interpreting diagnostic imaging studies. Other veterinarians do not receive the same quantity or quality of advanced training.
How can you support my practice?
We provide expert image interpretation (radiographs, fluoroscopy, CT, MRI) to help you make informed clinical decisions for your patient. Reports are tailored to the needs of the submitting veterinarian.
For those in San Mateo County, we also perform ultrasounds and minimally invasive ultrasound-guided procedures directly at your clinic, correlate the findings with other imaging modalities (e.g., radiographs, CT, MRI), and provide additional recommendations as needed to optimize your patient’s care.
Do you scan patients outside the clinic?
No, all scans/procedures are performed in hospital and under the request of the veterinarian.
What is your turnaround time?
Teleradiology reports are finalized within 24 hours after submission. STAT reads are not available at this time.
Ultrasound reports are finalized and emailed by 24 hours but more commonly submitted by the end of the business day. Major sonographic findings are verbally relayed at the time of the scan.
